How TV conquered Mangaldai and turned the people into zombies.
| Illustration: Paul Aitchison |
The year 1982 was an exciting one for Indian people. The radio and the newspapers were full of news of the Asian Games in New Delhi. Coins featuring Appu, the dancing elephant and mascot of the Games, and the Jantar Mantar in Delhi, about which many of us learnt for the first time, were already in circulation months before the opening ceremony. Newspapers told us that thousands of trees were felled in Delhi to broaden the streets, and that the price of tomatoes there was only INR 2 per kilogram due to the heavy influx of vegetables in preparation for the event. News of the construction of Appu Ghar, India’s first amusement park, got kids thrilled beyond belief.

Story Messy
Written By Mero Mind on Sunday, July 29, 2012 | 5:22 PM
Public campaigns—on cyberspace, print media, television and radio—have spurred three of our political stalwarts to publicly pledge not to avail of some of the state perks. Pushpa Kamal Dahal (aka Prachanda), Ram Chandra Poudel and Madhav Kumar Nepal have all returned government-owned Pajeros. Will Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai make a public pledge not to take the Mustang with him when he gives way to another guy in that hot seat soon? We do not know yet. We will also have to wait for some time to know how the Supreme Court will decide on a public-litigation filed by some lawyers to annul the Cabinet decision that paved the way for the Bhattarai Cabinet’s perk distribution scheme. Supreme Court judges are among the largest chunk of beneficiaries of that Cabinet decision, but we have been told again and again that Chief Justice Khila Raj Sharma is a man of principles. Well, let’s see what principle he will uphold in this case. His own perk is at stake. If Baburam Bhattarai is mindful of public opinions and his own repeated pledge not to embezzle public funds, he should annul the earlier Cabinet decision. According to one estimate, this decision will cost Nepali state over 50 crores annually. That is, excluding the costs involved in providing their security.

"Our Long Exile Starts"
The magnificent Second Temple went up in flames on the 9th of Av in the year 70 C.E. This started the long and arduous exile that the Jewish people are still mired in to this day. This picture depicts the Arch of Titus (yemach shmo v'zicharon), and in it Jewish slaves and precious Temple artifacts that were carried to rome, and can be found today underneath the vatican.
According to Josephus, a Roman soldier took a torch and threw it against the beautiful tapestries that Herod had made for the Temple and that hung along its walls. When they caught fire the Romans attempted to put it out, but there was not sufficient water. Somehow the fire was so intense that even the stone took hold and the building collapsed. The Talmud says that the Second Temple burned not only on the late afternoon of the ninth of Av, but the entire day of the tenth. It was just a raging conflagration.

"The Burning of our Holy Talmud"
It's not just the physical elimination of the Jewish people that our enemies have sought for thousands of years, it's the spiritual extinction as well. Some of the most tragic episodes in Jewish history were the countless attempts of the xtian church to destroy all remnants of the Talmud, the basis for Jewish Law. There is no way the Torah can be understood without an Oral explanation to go along with it, which is why the Talmud is the backbone of Judaism (see the link below in the comments for further details).

Internet Service Providers have grown over time, providing greater facilities and higher bandwidth to their consumers. People can finally dare to download more than just documents or mp3s. A step clear of the dial-up service ADSL, cable internet, wireless broadband services etc. now yield somewhere between 20-200 Kbps in download speed. This in turn encourages day to day users to download movies, games, software packages, music and all sorts of large media files. This is where torrents come in, the newest means of downloading files on the internet.

NC, UML no longer in 'wait and see' mood on PM ouster KOSH RAJ KOIRALA
Written By Mero Mind on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 | 5:05 PM
Convinced now that caretaker Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai won´t step down on his own, the opposition parties that were in a ´wait and see´ mood have decided to step up protests against the government.
A joint meeting of the two main opposition parties, Nepali Congress and CPN-UML, held at UML headquarters at Balkhu on Tuesday concluded that the prime minister was bent on prolonging his stay in power though he is now not in any position to hold the Constituent Assembly (CA) elections on the stipulated date of November 22.

Act tough on INGOs of Government plans
Written By Mero Mind on Monday, July 23, 2012 | 9:09 PM
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) is holding serious consultation with other government agencies to regulate International Non-Government Organisations (INGO) operating in the country. The ministry is set to come up with a formal mechanism at the cross-ministerial level to regulate and monitor the organisations.
According to the government’s official data, 207 INGOs are registered with the Social Welfare Council and have direct MoUs with various line ministries, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Finance. Likewise, 101 INGOs are registered with the Association of INGOs in Nepal, an umbrella organisation of Nepali INGOs.

Commission should be a constitutional body
Mohna Ansari is the country’s first female Muslim lawyer. Hailing from Banke, she’s created a name for herself as a women’s rights activist. Although she was nominated to the National Women’s Commission by the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Loktanntrik, Ansari claims she is not a politician, just a lawyer. In conversation with the Post’s Bidushi Dhungel, Ansari spoke about the progress in the women’s movement since 2006, her reflections on the inclusion policy, property and citizenship rights. Excerpts:
The National Women’s Comm-ission was formed in 2002. What has it achieved?
Our society is based on conservative and patriarchal ideals. Accordingly, the laws that govern our society are also incredibly conservative and patriarchal. The Commission has focused on suggesting reforms for unequal laws and policies which are disadvantageous for women. On that note, the Commission has taken the participation of women in the dissolved CA as an achievement. Prior to that, there was only a 5 percent reservation for women. The 33 percent reservation for women in all state mechanisms is certainly a step forward. The problem has been that the government’s commitments and policies do not match.
